Data Stewardship Framework
SIIA recognizes the critical importance of OCAP® principles in upholding Indigenous data sovereignty and self-determination. At the same time, we acknowledge the complexity of operationalizing these principles within a multi-Nation governance structure — one that includes Nation-based service delivery partners and data contributors, South Island-based service providers, other quasi-governmental service organizations, and multiple jurisdictional considerations.

To support this evolving landscape, SIIA is developing a data stewardship framework that upholds the principles of OCAP® while establishing a clear, practical, and coordinated approach to data management. This framework will be created alongside our Member Nations and the broader community, and must ensure that data is collected, used, and shared in a way that prioritizes the safety, wellbeing, and best interests of children, youth, and families — while respecting the distinct governance and data sovereignty of each Member Nation.
This project is currently funded by the BC First Nations' Data Governance Council (RIGC), with the goal to develop Nation-based Data Stewardship frameworks to guide the collection, use, sharing, and protection of Child and Family Services data.
